Adding minutes to your SIM card

There are two ways to add money to your ShenZhouXing account. The most common way is by using a pre-paid charge card; however, you can also directly debit money onto your SIM card if you have an account with China Merchant's Bank.

Regarding your account balance:
  • You may pre-load up to 5000RMB onto your SIM card (any excess money added will not be credited).
  • For balances of 500RMB and over, every time your balance passes a multiple of 500, you will receive a SMS with your current balance.
  • Whenever your account balance falls below 10RMB, you will receive an SMS from China Mobile reminding you to add minutes
  • If your account ever falls below zero, you will not be able to make or receive calls.

Each time you add money to your SIM you also extend the validity of your SIM card for up to two years out, according to the chart below:

Amount Charged 30 RMB 50 RMB 100 RMB 300 RMB 500 RMB
Added Validity 90 days 90 days 180 days 360 days 360 days
If your SIM expires, you can re-activate it within ninety days by simply adding money through the 13800138000 hotline. If you do not add money during that 90-day grace period, the SIM will be deemed abandoned and you will not be able to retrieve it.

Checking the balance and expiration date of your SIM card:
Dial 13800-138000

The system will tell you your current balance and expiration date
Pre-paid charge cards
Charge cards, or top-up cards, can be purchased at China Mobile stores or at one of the plethora of small distributors throughout town. Ask for ChongZhiKa at cigarette stores, magazine stalls, or other small convenient stores. ChongZhiKa normally are found as credit card-sized cards, but also come on perforated, tear-away paper tickets.

Common card denominations are 50RMB and 100RMB, but cards also come in 30RMB, 300RMB, and 500RMB denominations. The charge card costs the exact value stated on the card. You can ask for a receipt (FaPiao) when you purchase the charge card.

After you have purchased a charge card, scratch off the password, dial 13800-138000, and follow the voice prompts. Dialing through the SIM card you intend to add money to is easiest. If you dial via a land line or other mobile phone, you additionally will have to enter the phone number you wish to charge.

Debiting your China Merchant's Bank account
By setting up your Merchant's Bank account with China Mobile, you can use the 13800-138000 hotline to add money to your phone without having to track down a charge card. After applying, users can call 13800-138000 and select to add 50RMB, 100RMB, 300RMB, or 500RMB to their SIM.

You can activate, inquire, and cancel this service at your local branch, by phone, or from the Merchant's Bank website.

Internet Access

If your phone is capable of accessing the internet, ShenZhouXing users can inexpensively browse mobile internet sites and use other online services.

First check to see if your phone supports internet access. Look for these signs:
  • Does your phone have a web browser?
  • In your setup menu, do you have a category referring to web access, data networks, or something similar?
  • Check your phone's manual or the packaging that came with the phone; does it mention GPRS anywhere?
  • On phones purchased in China, you may have the red "MO" icon for China Mobiles internet service, Monternet, on your packaging or on your phone's menu.

Next you will need to activate your internet connection by calling 10086 and following the menu commands. When you activate GPRS, you will have a chance to choose an internet payment plan as well. Please refer to Internet Payment Plans below for more information.

The 10086 menu varies depending on the settings of your ShenZhouXing account. Not all ShenZhouXing accounts have access to the English 10086 menu at.

Note: China Mobile's menu is a bit slow, give it time to start announcing the choices before pressing the next number. If you feel like you’ve gotten off track, hang up and call back.
Many phones purchased in China will come pre-programmed to access the internet. If after trying your browser you are unable to make a connection, try these steps:
1. Go to your phone settings or setup menu
2. Find the "Data Networks", "GPRS", or "Cellular Internet" settings
On some phones, these settings are on your web browser's menu
3. Create a "New Connection" or "New Profile"
The name of the profile can be anything (e.g. "China Mobile")
4. For the APN (Access Point Name) enter "CMWAP".
5. Leave the "Username" and "Password" fields blank
6. Try opening up your web browser
If you are still unable to access the internet through your browser, your phone may be unable to detect some of the network settings. Try setting these values manually:
1. Set the Gateway IP to 10.0.0.172
2. Set the Port to 80
3. Set the connection to "Always On" or "Timeout: Off".
Mobile internet is charged by data transferred, not time online, so the connection can remain open at all times.
All phones have slightly different menus and settings. If you are still having trouble, consult your phone's manual or call Native at +86(10)5873.3387.

Internet payment plans

Mobile internet is charged by the amount of data you download to your phone, not by the time you have a connection open. Currently, service providers do not offer an unlimited access plan. The default access rate is relatively expensive, so you will probably want to sign up for one of the two ShenZhouXing packages.

GPRS Plans Monthly Fee Data Transfer Included Price per KB over
Standard 0 0 .03 RMB
5RMB Plan 5RMB 10MB .01 RMB
15RMB Plan 15RMB 50MB

If you never access the internet in a given month, you will not be charged that month's fee. Cellular internet access works all over China and is charged the same fee whether you are in your local network or roaming.

How much browsing can I do with 5 RMB?
Billing is calculated according to kilobytes (KB) of information transferred to your phone. There are 1028KB in one megabyte (1 MB). A web page designed specifically for phones usually requires about 5KB-50KB to load each time. Loading a full internet page like you would view on a computer requires a much larger data transfer. For example, viewing IMDB.com on your phone requires 155KB to view the main page.

Native's mobile site (MobNat.com) only needs 4KB to load the main page, 3KB to perform a search, and then 8KB to display a record, so with 10MB of included data transfer, you could look up over 650 restaurants and bars a month before spending more than 5RMB. Each time after that would cost about 0.15RMB. Alternatively, you could view a content-rich website like IMDB.com's main page about 65 times a month with 10MB.

*Note: ShenZhouXing users have limited internet access through China Mobile's gateway, not all pages on the world wide web can be accessed.

How do I sign up for a plan?
The easiest way to sign up for a plan is to call 10086 and tell the operator which plan you would like.

About Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)
If you activate internet access, you can also send MMS through China Mobile's Fetion service. This allows you to send pictures, audio files, hyperlinked text, and animations to other MMS-enabled mobile phones. MMS cost 0.6RMB to send and are free to receive.

You can check your detailed phone bill online by logging into your account from China Mobile's ShenZhouXing page: easyown.bj.chinamobile.com. You will need to first register by entering a password sent to your phone via SMS. You can then log-in subsequent times using your cell phone number and PIN.

Saving money on your phone bill

China Mobile offers a lot of great ways to reduce your phone bill; unfortunately, they haven't got around to translating these into English.
