Sunny, casual cafe by day, smart whiskey and cocktail bar by night; from the owners of Er and Apothecary
Cafe
Up a winding couple flights of stairs at the center of Jianwai SOHO lies a straightforward cafe, but a better bar. I made the mistake of checking out Twilight for lunch and not for drinks. For lunch, the cafe is bright and clean, but the menu is rather limited. Arriving for lunch on a Thursday at 1:30pm, even the limited menu was further pared down. Our table of three, all of whom wanted pizza was only able to order two as there were only enough ingredients left for two pies. So one of us drew the short straw and changed to pasta, but the eggplant, pork, and vegetable pasta was out, too. The only other lunch entree left was the spaghetti bolognese (49RMB). All the lunch items come with a small salad and a soup, both of which were well executed on our visit. My margherita pizza (39RMB) and another companion's homemade sausage pizza (49RMB) were both perfectly acceptable. He remarked after finishing, that "I would come back if this place was right next to my office."
My thoughts exactly. As a cafe, Twilight is only a notch above average. The bar itself and the one private room provide a bit better atmosphere for enjoying their signature cocktails than the otherwise Ikea-sterile setting. But don't take my word for it, Beijing Boyce gave their serious mixology a proper test drive. (Feb '10)
