Classic hutong location, clean courtyard interior, fantastic Guizhou dishes, and very reasonable prices make this a knock-out hidden gem
Guizhou
So my parents were in town for a second visit of Beijing and with each restaurant we tried, I wanted to impress them with a different cuisine of China. I had heard great accolades for Da Gui, or "Da Great", and thought this might be a suitable representative of the Guizhou kitchen. The restaurant ended up being their favorite destination over the course of a two week visit and one of my most enjoyable dining experience in recent memory.
The restaurant has the added appeal of being a hidden gem, located on an old hutong with little else of note around. The homey courtyard has nice touches on the inside, but can get a bit crowded and smoky at dinner. We stopped in for lunch and couldn't stop raving about the food. Our favorite dish by far was the fried tāngyuán (28RMB). Tangyuan are basically sweet fried balls of dough, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, accompanied by pickled vegetables. The texture and flavor contrasts make for a thrilling taste sensation. As my role as tour guide for my parent's excursion, I had covered the ubiquitous cylindrical charcoal briquettes used in stoves around China, so we had fun ordering a mock charcoal briquette (12RMB). It's a small portion of sweet rice with fabulous presentation (see photo); enough for four or more people to tear off a piece and roll it in the accompanying crushed peanuts.
I was excited to see an eggplant dish on the menu that wasn't cooked either hóngshāo or yúxiāng style, and their fried eggplant and cilantro (26RMB) really was delightful. The fried spicy potatoes (28RMB) were quite good, but relative to the other stand-out dishes, could only be considered average.
Did I mention this was one of my favorite Chinese meals in recent memory? It's a great value, too, as long as you don't get carried away and order a really expensive fish (their sour fish soup is the house specialty and comes highly recommended). Give Da Gui a try and impress your friends. (Apr '10)
