Tasty, reasonably-priced Mexican dining in the heart of old Beijing; now with decent rooftop alfresco option
Mexican
¿Qué? A Mexican restaurant in lao Beijing?!? That's what most laobaixing seemed to be wondering as they made their usual stroll down Gulou Dong Dajie, copping a double-take at the unfamiliar Spanish tunes wafting from this bright orange facade. The newest entry to Beijing's Mexican dining scene, opened by a local Beijinger, offers some great dishes on a relatively inexpensive menu.

Amigo is offering 15% off their menu during the opening two weeks, so I tried it out for lunch on two occasions. The first day I sampled their bean and cheese soft tacos (24RMB). I was served three normal-sized flour tortillas with refried beans and cheese inside. What makes the deal is that they also serve a small salsa bar with Pico de gallo and two types of homemade salsa. These were a steal at 24RMB and were plenty for lunch.

The following day I brought a companion along and we ordered way too much food. He started with their tortilla soup (16RMB) that has a Mexican-style tomato base topped with cheese and avocado. We also shared some of their stuffed jalapenos (29RMB) to start. These are the best thing on the menu that I've tried thus far. These huge, fresh peppers are stuffed with cream cheese and then deep-fried in a homemade batter. They have a nice satisfying hotness to them without being overwhelmingly spicy; enough to get a healthy sweat going on a late-summer day. If you're afraid of the heat, keep a cold Corona (20RMB) at hand to douse the flames. My companion ordered the same soft tacos I had had the day before, but on this day they were four small corn soft tacos rather than the three flour tortillas I had the day before. I tried one and I found the corn tortillas more to my liking. The vegetable enchiladas (29RMB) I had weren't terribly authentic, but were a nice choice for a vegetarian. Inside the two baked tortillas smothered in cheese were mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and tomatoes.

Something new for Dongcheng, Amigo delivers surprisingly good, often authentic, and very inexpensive cuisine. While it might look more at home in Sanlitun, there are more than a few residents of Dongcheng that are happy to welcome it to the neighborhood. (Sep '09)

After skipping lunch to snack on Easter chocolates all day, I was famished by the time I finally made it to dinner at 8:30pm. I happily burned my mouth on the stuffed jalapenos, fresh from the deep-fryer. The veggie enchiladas were perfect. I could have easily eaten a second one if it was there in front of me.

So good food, but atrocious service. I'm hoping it was the girl's first day, because she was clearly bewildered by her job. No task was too simple for her not to see through. Ugh. Otherwise a very pleasant experience.

We went for a heavy sunday brunch, the salad was ok, the salad was ok, the stuffed jalapenos were really delicious and chilly. We have finished with fried bananas to those I would add more cinnamon, but a nice finale.
